چکیده

Measuring is a key to scientific progress. This is particularly true for research concerning complex systems. Multilingual and multimedia information access systems, such as search engines, are increasingly complex: they need to satisfy diverse user needs and support challenging tasks. Their development calls for proper evaluation methodologies to ensure that they meet the expected user requirements and provide the desired effectiveness. Information Retrieval (IR) research offers a strong evaluation methodology and a range of evaluation metrics, such as Mean Average Precision (MAP) and Normalized Discounted Cumulated Gain ((n)DCG). In this paper, we propose a new metric for ranking evaluation, the Cumulated Relative Position (CRP). We start with the observation that a document of a given degree of relevance may be ranked too early or too late regarding the ideal ranking of documents for a query. Its relative position may be negative, indicating too early ranking, zero indicating correct ranking, or positive, indicating too late ranking. By cumulating these relative rankings we indicate, at each ranked position, the net effect of document displacements, the CRP. We first define the metric formally and then discuss its properties, its relationship to prior metrics, and its visualization. Finally we propose different visualizations of CRP by exploiting a test collection to demonstrate its behavior.

Reducing Position-Sensitive Subset Ranking to Classification

A widespread idea to attack ranking works by reducing it into a set of binary preferences and applying well studied classification techniques. The basic question addressed in this paper relates to whether an accurate classifier would transfer directly into a good ranker. In particular, we explore this reduction for subset ranking, which is based on optimization of DCG metric (Discounted Cumulat...

Discounted Cumulated Gain Based Evaluation of Multiple-Query IR Sessions

IR research has a strong tradition of laboratory evaluation of systems. Such research is based on test collections, pre-defined test topics, and standard evaluation metrics. While recent research has emphasized the user viewpoint by proposing user-based metrics and non-binary relevance assessments, the methods are insufficient for truly user-based evaluation. The common assumption of a single q...

eXtended Cumulated Gain Metrics for the Evaluation of Content-oriented XML Retrieval

We propose and evaluate a family of metrics, named the eXtended Cumulated Gain (XCG) metrics, for the evaluation of content-oriented XML retrieval approaches. Our aim is to provide an evaluation framework that allows to consider the dependency that exists among XML document components and, in particular, incorporate mechanisms to reward the retrieval of so-called nearmisses and to address issue...
